Are you tired of staring at a boring desktop background? Want to spruce up your computer screen with something a little more visually interesting? Look no further! In this guide, we’ll show you how to create a one-of-a-kind stunning desktop wallpaper using Stable Diffusion.
With Stable Diffusion, it’s possible to create pretty much any image into a desktop wallpaper. In this guide, we’re going to make some landscape-based wallpapers, similar to what you might see on your computer by default.
You may think simply setting the output resolution to match your screen resolution is all it would take to create the wallpaper, but in fact there are going to be some issues trying this method.
The image above was created by setting the resolution to 1920 x 1080. Due to restrictions in how Stable Diffusion can generate images, the dimensions of the output image must be divisible by 64. Although 1920 is nicely divided into 30 chunks of 64, 1080 does not. So we need to either change the height to 1088 or 1024.
With the dimensions set, we run into another interesting issue. Images generated this way seem to come out with a certain homogeneity across the image. You can see in the above examples, using different seeds, although same prompt. Usually wildly unique results would be produced with such general prompt language though.
As you can see, it’s mostly trees with randomly dispersed darker trees and clouds. To fix this issue we will need to use a new technique called Hires Fix.
What is Hires Fix for Stable Diffusion?
Hires Fix is a term that popular Stable Diffusion apps use to describe a two step process to upscale the image. It literally means “High Resolution Fix”. The process allows high resolution outputs to have much more interesting compositions. We begin by generating a Text-to-Image at smaller size, more similar to the default 512×512. Once the image is generated, it’s upscaled to the desired size, stretching the pixels. Then Stable Diffusion uses Image-to-Image to generate a new image based on the upscaled image and the existing prompt. The resulting image will have a very similar composition as the first generated smaller image, but with increased details and at a large size.
In MitchJourney-E version 2, the upscale checkbox will automatically enable the Hires Fix feature to easily create images fit for a desktop wallpaper.

As usual, with Stable Diffusion there will be images that come out a little nonsensical, but having an excellent prompt can still create beautiful results, if not abstract.
